The purpose of the world day for safety and patient – increase the global awareness about patient safety and promoting common solidarity actions as a professional community and the patients themselves, their relatives, various organizations representing the interests of patients.

Currently, the definition of patient safety is primarily associated with preventing errors during medical care and a lower risk of adverse events associated with health care to an acceptable minimum. This at least should be considered as a consensus of all stakeholders taking into account available current knowledge, resources, and conditions in which medical care is provided.

According to leading world experts in different countries in the provision of patient care possible harm to at least every 10th patient. Harm can be caused by a number of undesired events, almost half of which can be successfully prevented. As illustrated by the reduction of the prevalence of nosocomial infections in 55% is due exclusively to the observance and implementation of rules of hygiene of hands.

The Federal service for supervision in the sphere of health approved a Plan of events dedicated to "world day of patient safety" in 2019. A key slogan of the current year in the Russian Federation: "safety Culture is the responsibility of everyone."
