The head of the department is Alexander Alexandrovich Maklagin, a cardiovascular surgeon of the highest qualification category.

Cardiac Surgery Department No. 1 was opened on October 1, 2013 on the basis of the MRCCB surgical building, with 30 beds. This is the only specialized vascular department in the Republic of Mordovia, which provides planned and daily round-the-clock emergency care to patients with vascular pathology, as well as organizational, methodological and advisory assistance to the regions of the Republic of Mordovia.

The main area of work of the department is the provision of round-the-clock emergency and planned medical care for the following types of vascular surgery:

• surgical treatment of patients with occlusive lesions of the abdominal aorta and arteries of the lower extremities;
• surgical treatment of peripheral artery aneurysms;
• surgical treatment of acute thrombosis of the aorta and main arteries of extremities;
• surgical treatment of embolisms of the aorta, arteries of the upper and lower extremities;
• surgical treatment of wounds of the main vessels (various types of reconstructive operations);
• hybrid interventions (simultaneous open surgical and endovascular intervention);
• surgical and conservative treatment of acute venous thrombosis;
• surgical treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities;
